Harmony-North Harmony Schools

Town of Harmony & North Harmony Common Schools, 1830-1938

Thanks to HHS Historian, Pam Brown and volunteer extraordinaire Adrienne Ploss, we now have an interactive map of the Harmony schools that existed from 1830-1938.

It is interesting to note that the maps project was a "complete fluke" according to Adrienne, and was an outgrowth of the HHS signs project." (More on that later) Here are the many steps that went into this project. Adrienne set up the map; researched the deeds, genealogy, county atlases; wrote descriptions; and posted the photos. Pam transcribed and contributed former Harmony Historian George Fowler’s notes on district schools, shared her notes and photos from her PowerPoint slide presentation; pulled photos from digital archives and scrapbooks; and gave Adrienne open access to trustee record books, and Harmony school trustee reports.

Per Adrienne "This project has far exceeded Pam’s (as well as mine) expectations because research uncovered school houses that she was unaware existed: early Morley school near site of Camp Chautauqua, early Stedman school house at northwest corner of Stedman, and Open Meadows school house north of Ebenezer church, Cherry Hill existed in two locations, etc.). Deeds that I found (for about three-quarters of the 23 school districts on map) confirmed locations and filled in missing info when the schools were built, etc. Neither Fowler nor Darrow had done research (or had done very limited research) on deeds for the school houses. Those deeds answered a lot of questions....This project has been two months in the making and worth it."

We hope you all will agree!
